Middle Area Junior Band Clinic
Fundamentally, Junior Band Clinic is a high-level honor band event for younger musicians regarded to be among the most talented in their region. Auditions are held annually for students (grade 6-8). Three bands are formed (gold, silver and bronze), and the event culminates in concerts performed by each of the bands. All of the students that complete the clinic are entitled to receive a medal from the association.
The event itself is a two day long intensive musical workshop (“clinic”) where students learn and perform new or advanced repertoire under the guidance of guest conductors. The focus is on improving technique, ensemble skills, and advancing musicianship.
In the middle area of East Tennessee, Jr. Clinic traditionally meets on the first Friday and Saturday of December. Annual auditions for this event are in November. Detailed information about audition requirements is available from the student’s band director.
Middle Area Solo & Ensemble
The Solo and Ensemble Festival is an opportunity for younger musicians (grade 6-12) to perform a solo(s) of their choosing, or small ensemble music (duet, trio, etc.), or both, for an adjudicator to receive a rating (grade) of I – IV and personalized feedback for the performance.
The ratings are as follows: I- Superior, II-Excellent, III- Good, IV- Fair.
Students that earn a rating of I or II are entitled to receive a medal from the association.
Performances may be with or without an accompanist.
There is no required solo list – each student may choose his own music. The student’s director should assist in music selection to ensure that it is appropriate. In the middle area of East TN, this event typically takes place in April.
